Abstract Ca-based porous and rough bioceramic surfaces were coated onto zirconium by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Subsequently, the MAO-coated covered with an antimicrobial chitosan layer via dip coating method to develop antimicrobial, bioactive, biocompatible composite biopolymer for implant applications. Cubic ZrO 2 , metastable Ca 0.15 Zr 0.85 O 1.85 3 (PO 4 ) detected on MAO surface powder-XRD. The existence of was verified FTIR. micropores thermal cracks sealed using a coating, where rough.
